Libraries, museums and theaters in Citrus, Hernando and Pasco County: things to do indoors

When it's too hot or too wet to be outside, you still have plenty of places to go. This page covers free library cards and classes, books by mail, free museum passes, local history museums, and community theaters in all three counties.

Checked against the county library systems, the museums and theaters themselves, and the other sources listed at the bottom. Hours and show dates change, so call or check the linked page before you go. Last reviewed: October 5, 2026.

The short version:

Indoor options at a glance

What are some fun indoor activities to do in Florida?

Here, the public library is the easiest place to start. A card is free for county residents, and each system runs free or low-cost programs, from book clubs to computer classes.

After that, you have small local history museums in all three counties, a state park museum in Crystal River, and community theaters in Hernando, Spring Hill, and New Port Richey. Each one is listed below, with a phone number where we could confirm one.

If you'd like to get out and be around people on a regular schedule, senior centers and clubs are on our recreation for seniors page. Our loneliness and isolation page has more ideas.

Citrus County Library System

A library card is free if you live in Citrus County. The library's library card page lists what counts as proof, such as a Florida driver's license with your Citrus address, a county tax receipt, or a utility bill. If you live elsewhere but work in Citrus County, a pay stub or work badge gets you a card too. Everyone else pays $50 a year.

Adults 18 and older who live in the county can also sign up online for a digital card from that same page.

There are five branches. Hours are on the library's locations page.

The library says its programs and events are free. Its adult programs page lists book clubs, craft and card-making sessions, sewing classes, adult coloring, plant swaps, and genealogy help from the Citrus County Genealogical Society.

For computer and phone help, the library runs free technology classes. These include "Tech Talks" on topics like using a smartphone and staying safe online, plus hands-on computer lab classes at Central Ridge and Homosassa. You sign up on the library's events calendar.

To read at home, the library uses Libby, a free app for borrowing ebooks, audiobooks, and magazines on a phone or tablet.

Hernando County Public Library System

A library card is free if you live in Hernando County. Bring a photo ID and proof of your local address, such as a utility bill or lease. If you live outside the county, the card is $15 a year. The details are on the library's get a library card page.

The library uses one phone number for all branches: 352-754-4043. Hours are on its locations page.

The library's events calendar lists book discussions, computer classes, and movies. Many programs ask you to register ahead.

For reading and watching at home, the library's digital content page lists Libby for ebooks and audiobooks, Hoopla for ebooks, audiobooks, movies, music, and TV, and Flipster for digital magazines.

Pasco County Libraries

How do I get a library card in Pasco County?

Go to any Pasco library branch and fill out a registration form. Bring an ID with proof of a permanent Pasco County address. The full card is free for residents 16 and older. The library's library card page lists what counts, such as a Florida driver's license, voter registration, a property tax receipt, or a utility bill in your name.

Pasco doesn't sell a card to people who live outside the county. If you already have a card from Citrus or Hernando County, though, the reciprocal borrowing policy lets you borrow in Pasco too. Bring that card and another form of ID.

If you live in Pasco and can't get to a branch, the registration policy says you can get a digital card for ebooks and other online resources.

Hours and phone numbers for every branch are on the locations and hours page. The branches are closed Sundays, except Starkey Ranch.

For one-on-one help with computer basics, tech questions, or the library's online services, use Book-A-Librarian. You get a one-hour appointment with a librarian. Book it online or call any branch.

Pasco's digital content page lists Libby and cloudLibrary for ebooks and audiobooks, and Kanopy for streaming movies. If you run a book club, the library lends book club kits too.

Books by mail and home delivery

If getting to a branch is hard, two of the three counties will bring books to you.

Free museum passes with your library card

Two of the libraries lend passes that get you into museums for free. You check out the pass like a book, and your checkout receipt is your ticket.

Hernando County has museum passes for the May-Stringer House, the 1885 Train Depot, and the Countryman One Room Schoolhouse in Brooksville, plus the Florida Holocaust Museum and the Tampa Bay History Center. Each pass admits 4 people and is good for 7 days. You can have one pass out at a time.

Pasco County calls them Discovery Passes, for residents with a full library card. Partners include the Florida Holocaust Museum, the Imagine Museum, the Tampa Bay History Center, and the Museum of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg. All four are outside our three counties. The same page also gives out 2 free tickets per registration to shows at Richey Suncoast Theatre in New Port Richey. Registration opens 14 days before each show.

What's on this week

Where can I find events happening in Pasco County?

Start with the Pasco library system's events calendars. There's one for each branch, plus an "All Upcoming Events" calendar and online programs you can join from home.

For a show, check Richey Suncoast Theatre in New Port Richey and Starkey Ranch Theatre in Odessa, both listed above. The Pioneer Florida Museum also holds special events, with their own hours and prices.

Our Nature Coast calendar covers seasonal events across all three counties.

Where can I find out what's going on in Citrus County?

Two calendars cover most indoor events. The library's events calendar lets you search by branch and date. The Old Courthouse Heritage Museum's calendar lists evening concerts, adult craft classes, and free gallery receptions.
