Staying safe and connected at home

A few simple devices can let an older adult call for help in a fall, let a faraway family member look in and say hello, and make daily life easier, all so they can stay in their own home longer.

Common questions on this page

Choose what you need

Medical alert & fall detection

Help buttons and fall detection: how they work, cost, and who pays.

Security systems & cameras

Cameras and doorbells for checking in, plus Florida's recording law.

Checking in from afar

Video calls, a screen that auto-answers, and wearables that call for help.

Smart-home helpers

Reminders, smart locks, night-lights, and automatic pill dispensers.

Hurricane prep

Registry, a senior-ready kit, power and oxygen, and evacuation.

Scams & fraud

The scams that target seniors, the red flags, and how to report.

Much of this is set up by a family member and needs home Wi-Fi. If it's for a fall or medical emergency specifically, start with medical alert & fall detection. Making the home physically safer (grab bars, ramps) is a separate step, see making the home safe.

How this fits with the rest

These devices work well alongside the basics: a home that's physically safe to move around in, and people to help. See making the home safe for grab bars, ramps, and walk-in showers, and help for family caregivers if you're the one doing the caring from near or far.

Common questions

What's the simplest thing to set up first?
For a fall or medical worry, a medical alert button. For staying in touch, a video call on the phone they already have. Both are quick wins you can build on later.
Can I watch my parent's home with a camera legally?
Video in shared areas is generally fine, but in Florida, recording someone's audio without consent can be illegal. Never put cameras in bathrooms or bedrooms. See our security & cameras page for the details.
Do these devices need internet?
Most do, cameras, smart displays, smart-home devices, and video calls all rely on home Wi-Fi. Some medical alert buttons use their own cellular signal instead.
